Sir Nigel Knowles, Chair of the Sheffield City Region, today welcomed both Theresa May’s newly-unveiled Industrial Strategy Green Paper, and the news that the city region will receive £38million of the latest round of Northern Powerhouse funding.
And he particularly welcomed the national focus on areas where the city region has exceptional strengths -industrial digitisation, and the automotive, aerospace, and civil nuclear sectors.
Sir Nigel said: “Our strong public-private partnership and our proven track record of delivery for the residents and businesses of the city region has helped secure these local growth fund resources.
“We now have an investment programme totalling over half a billion pounds that we’re investing in priorities such as building an Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District, growing Doncaster-Sheffield Airport, and creating a super-connected city region at the heart of the national economy.”
The region sees the national strategy echoing the impetus behind its own strategy to underpin business growth and create jobs.
In the six years since the city region was created, with a £30billion economy and 52,000 businesses, local authority heads and private sector business leaders have:
Dramatically speeded up the development of key projects by providing the money for infrastructure works. This has meant that many projects could go ahead much faster than would have otherwise been possible, bringing forward the potential for jobs. Projects helped in this way include the Doncaster-Sheffield Airport link road with the M18; Chesterfield Waterside mixed-use development; Peak Resort leisure and visitor attraction; and improvements to the M1 Junction 36 in Barnsley.
Provided a very different approach to funding for skills training. City region employers can define the training they need rather than have to accept a pre-set menu.
Tackled a badly needed skills sector, rail engineering, by getting the National College for High Speed Rail off the ground. The College will provide thousands of highly-skilled engineers the industry needs, boosting productivity and growth.
