It’s the annual opportunity to showcase towns, cities and regions on a global platform.
And now Sheffield City Region (SCR)’s private and public sector delegation is preparing to fly out to the French Riviera on Monday 12 March for MIPIM Cannes, the world’s biggest real estate conference.
The event, which runs until Friday 16 March, is where deals get done and where new business partnerships are made.
Sir Nigel Knowles, chairman of the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership, will be leading the SCR delegation, which includes Dave Smith, managing director of Sheffield City Region, John Mothersole, chief executive of Sheffield City Council, and Diana Terris, chief executive of Barnsley Council.
Sir Nigel said: “At MIPIM, public and private sector representatives from across the region will be coming together to promote our super-connected economy, our world-leading expertise in innovation and the fantastic quality of life we have to offer to residents, businesses and investors.
“Sheffield City Region has a unique role to help create new businesses, support the growth of existing ones, and inspire and attract foreign ones to come to the region.
“By taking a delegation of private and public sector experts to MIPIM, we can make more contacts, follow up leads and bring in investment.”
Sheffield City Region (SCR) will be running events across four days, focusing on three main themes of our super-connected economy, our excellence in innovation and the SCR as a great place to live.
One highlight is set to be an Estates Gazette panel session supported by David Cross, founding director of the Coda Group and artist Alex Chinneck, with the theme of how great architects and artists are leading our regeneration journey.
Mr Chinneck, who is behind the ambitious Onwards & Upwards art project planned as a ‘Gateway to the North’ in the heart of Sheffield City Region, will speak to potential investors and dignitaries from around the world about how Onwards & Upwards will transform the waterways at Tinsley, linking Sheffield and Rotherham, into a cultural destination.
Martin McKervey, partner at international law firm CMS and board member of the Sheffield City Region LEP, is one of those joining the delegation.
He said: “MIPIM is a timely opportunity to recognise and talk to a global audience about the great successes of Sheffield City Region over the last year.
“Importantly, it is very much about building on the vision to achieve even greater things for the region, showcasing the world class opportunities we offer across real estate, infrastructure, urban regeneration, technology, innovation and our great sense of place and quality of life.”
Public sector representatives on the SCR delegation will come from Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster and Sheffield councils, as well as Destination Chesterfield.
Scott Cardwell, Assistant Director of Development at Doncaster Council, said: “Doncaster has a great story to tell and we need to be telling it on the international stage.
“We all know competition for new investment is fierce so we need to be out there selling Doncaster to secure multi-million pound investment into the borough which delivers more economic growth and jobs.”
Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield, added: “Chesterfield has become a significant and attractive location in the UK thanks to both the current investment and the forthcoming HS2 station.
“Chesterfield is a town punching above its weight, made possible by the partnership of public and private sector partnership and investment. We have secured more than a £1bn of development in the borough, bringing significant investment potential to the area to create a contemporary destination for businesses, residents and visitors.”
More than 80 people will be flying out to the Riviera on the bespoke Sheffield City Region flight direct from Doncaster Sheffield Airport to Nice.
They include public sector delegates, as well as representatives from partner organisations including Harworth Group PLC, Network Space, Scarborough Group International, Doncaster Sheffield Airport, Trebbi, Kier Construction Northern, Sheffield Hallam University, CMS, JF Finnegan, ASK4, CounterContext, Sheffield Property Association, Engie, Turner and Townsend, Coda Planning, Arup, Bond Bryan Architects, HLM and Whittam Cox Architects.
